STOCK MARKET TIPS (APR 09)


SENSEX DROPS FURTHER; HINDALCO, STERLITE, BHEL DRAG

Indian equities extended losses tracking weak global cues. Metal, capital goods and power stocks led the decline.  
Sensex was trading down 208.56 points or 1.19% at 17,277.46 with 24 components falling. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 67.75 points or 1.27% at 5,255.15 with 43 components falling.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a decline of 78.36 points or 0.45% at 17,407.66, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a fall of 40.40 points or 0.76%, at 5,282.50.
Sensex Movers
I C I C I Bank contributed fall of 26.46 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Larsen & Toubro (21.24 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation (21 points), Reliance Industries (20.3 points) and Infosys (16 points).
However, Tata Consultancy Services contributed rise of 3.24 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Hindustan Unilever (3.08 points), D L F (1.07 points), Tata Power Company (0.49 points) and Bharti Airtel (0.08 points).
Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were D L F (1.05%), Bajaj Auto (0.59%), Hindustan Unilever (0.59%), Tata Consultancy Services (0.40%), Tata Power Company (0.25%), and Bharti Airtel (0.02%).
On the other hand, Hindalco Industries (3.76%), Sterlite Industries (India) (3.03%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.98%), Jindal Steel & Power (2.93%), Larsen & Toubro (2.49%), and Tata Steel (2.23%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts declining-0.88% and -0.29% respectively.

The major losers in the BSE Midcap were Aban Offshore (3.31%), Alstom Projects India (2.32%), CORE Education and Technologies (1.49%), Alok Industries (1.23%) and Allcargo Logistics (1.22%).

The major losers in the BSE Smallcap were A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (2.73%), Aanjaneya Lifecare (1.44%), Action Construction Equipment (0.93%), Aegis Logistics (0.33%) and INEOS ABS (India) (0.3%).
Sectors in Limelight
The Metal index was at 11,076.60, down by 278.67 points or by 2.45%. The major losers were Hindalco Industries (3.76%), Jindal Steel & Power (2.93%), Bhushan Steel (2.89%), Hindustan Zinc (1.32%) and Coal India (1.19%).
The Capital Goods index was at 10,121.15, down by 237.68 points or by 2.29%. The major losers were Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.98%), Alstom Projects India (2.32%), A B B (2.01%), BEML (1.66%) and Bharat Electronics (1.57%).
The Power index was at 2,118.77, down by 39.35 points or by 1.82%. The major losers were Reliance Infrastructure (3.07%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.98%), Crompton Greaves (2.24%), A B B (2.01%) and Adani Power (1.24%).
On the other hand, the HC index was at 6,581.11, up by 11.12 points or by 0.17%. The major gainers were Ranbaxy Laboratories (2.73%), Biocon (1.69%), Dr Reddy`S Laboratories (1.31%), Ipca Laboratories (0.67%) and Lupin (0.48%).
Market Breadth
Market breadth was negative with 968 advances against 1,314 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
State Bank Of India topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 248.50 million. It was followed by Britannia Industries (Rs. 241.66 million), Max India (Rs. 196.17 million) and JSW Steel (Rs. 155.21 million).
The volume chart was led by Avance Technologies with trades of over 12.00 million shares. It was followed by Kingfisher Airlines (3.71 million), Cals Refineries (2.59 million) and Suzlon Energy (2.57 million).
