Sensex ends 131 points higher; Bharti, Dlf, Sterlite rally
Markets had a gap up opening on positive global cues. Initial gains were witnessed in heavyweight Reliance counter and auto stocks.
Auto stocks were active today as most of the major companies reported better sales figure for the Jan month.
During the morning session Nifty edged higher amid cautious sentiments as Supreme Court was expected to announce its decision on the issues relating to the 2G case, including Home Minister P.
Chidambaram`s alleged role in the scam.
Nifty touched the intraday high of 5289.95 during the early morning session itself. As the decision was announced by the apex court cancelling the 2G licenses allocation, market turned extremely volatile.
Nifty slipped almost 70 points on the announcement as sentiments turned cautious. Telecom stocks witnessed selling pressure thereafter.
However, as expected, the level of 5,225-5,220 provided good support for the market and Nifty bounced back from the low of 5,225.75 to again trade in green, regaining all its morning gains.
The session was choppy afterwards. Nifty closed with gains of over 0.5%.
IT stocks attracted buying interest amid positive economic data from the US and better than expected results of Mahindra Satyam and Hex aware.s
Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty went up by 45.75 points or 0.87% at 5,281.45 with 33 components registering rise.
Sensex Movers
Bharti Airtel contributed rise of 41.87 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I C I C I Bank (19.56 points), Tata Consultancy Services (12.9 points), Larsen & Toubro (11.43 points) and Infosys (11.03 points).
However, I T C contributed fall of 18.39 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Tata Motors (5.05 points), Reliance Industries (3.68 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation (3.3 points) and Reliance Communications (3.08 points).
Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Bharti Airtel (6.88%), D L F (4.05%), Sterlite Industries (India) (3.90%), Wipro (3.46%), G A I L (India) (3.15%), and Hindalco Industries (3.04%).
On the other hand, Cipla (2.53%), I T C (1.36%), Jindal Steel & Power (1.05%), Tata Motors (0.99%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (0.91%), and Bajaj Auto (0.50%) were the major losers in the Sensex.
