DATE: 18/04/2012
Indian benchmark indices, the Sensex and the Nifty, ended the session flat today amid a weak trend in the European markets.
Heavy selling in realty, capital goods, FMCG and bank stocks trimmed the Sensex gains. Auto, healthcare, metal and oil & gas counters witnessed heavy buying.
At 3.30 p.m., the 30-share BSE index Sensex was up 21 points or 0.12 per cent at 17,378.94 and the 50-share NSE index Nifty was up 5.3 points or 0.1 per cent at 5,295.
Volume toppers were SBI, Infosys, Tata Motors, Tata Steel and RIL. Among the 30-share Sensex, Bajaj Auto, Hindalco, Tata Motors, Tata Power and Sun Pharma were the top performers. ITC, DLF, BHEL, L&T and SBI were the major losers.
The Nifty opened with a gap up of 31 points at 5,320. The Sensex opened with a gap up of 90 points at 17,447.
“The IMF forecast that global economic growth is slowly improving saw Asian markets open strongly today,”
“With RBI sending positive signals through a 50 basis points rate cut, it remains to be seen how banks and corporates respond to this.”
